I have a sick child keeping at home right now, so I already know I'm not going to get to go use a computer this weekend, so I am just going to get some very basic results for this show so I can move on to other things.
EVOLVE 1 - 2300 Arena, Philadelphia, PA, Oct. 18, 2024
* Ian Riccaboni and Nigel McGuinness are calling the action. We've got Bryan Danielson, legend and co-founder of EVOLVE, in the main event taking on the Russian phenom Ilja Dragunov. It's American Dragon vs. Mad Dragon tonight! We also have a huge main event with "The Ring General" Gunther taking on the outstanding international sensation Will Ospreay!
* Bobby Fish def. AR Fox with the Double Jump Moonsault to earn a pinfall.
* Bryan Danielson promo on Ilja Dragunov. Danielson says he is coming to the end of the line, and wants to go out with a bang. He said Ilja is at the top of the game, and is a great up and comer, but he's hungry to prove he can still hang and get the job done against the best!
* "The Octopus" Jonathan Gresham and "Speedball" Mike Bailey go to a ten minute draw after a battle of mat grappling versus expert striking.
* Drew Gulak def. Timothy Thatcher with a Double Chicken-wing Roll-up for the pinfall.
* Promo from Ilja Dragunov backstage. Dragunov says he has a lot of respect for Danielson and has looked up to him for years. He says it is hard to face your heroes, because deep down, you don't want to beat them. You don't want to see them lose and fade away. Danielson being one step closer to the end only shines a light on how fleeting this journey really is. All of that considered, Ilja says he can't afford to let these sentimental feelings blind him tonight. He says when he has Danielson in his sights and it's time to go for the kill, he will be ready to put him down like anybody else, and he knows Danielson wouldn't have it any other way.
* Kyle O'Reilly def. "The Bruiser weight" Pete Dunne with a Triangle Choke after a very hard fought match. O'Reilly offered to shake Pete's hand afterwards, but the bitter Dunne was having no part of it.
* We go backstage, where Gunther is standing in for a promo. Gunther says Will Ospreay has made a big name for himself all over the world and has amazed fans where ever he went. Tonight, he says the fans will be amazed if he can walk out after the beating he receives from Gunther. Gunther says he is not impressed with Ospreay, but he intends to make an impression on him... A lot of them.
* Shelton Benjamin def. Zack Sabre Jr. after countering a hold into a Fisherman's roll-up for a three. This was a chain wrestling master class, and the fans were overjoyed when Benjamin found a way to beat the technical wizard and show he still has it on the mat.
* Backstage with Will Ospreay for a promo. Ospreay says Gunther is a big, mean geezer, but he's seen a lot of those. He's got big chops, so do a lot of guys. He says Gunther has never seen a guy like Ospreay, no matter what he thinks, and says he's going to feel the difference tonight. One way or another, he's going to respect him before it's all over, that's for damn sure.
* Claudio Castagnoli def. Matt Riddle with the Swiss Death for the pinfall. Riddle and Claudio had a fun match here, and played to the crowd a lot to get them into this. Big, energetic back and forth finale ended with the pop-up European Uppercut, scoring a knock out pinfall for the Swiss Superman.
* Gunther def. Will Ospreay after a Lariat nearly flipped the Brit out of his boots. Ospreay gave Gunther all that he could handle, which seemed to surprise the Austrian in the early going. Ospreay is a lot stronger than he thought, it would seem, and hit Gunther with some very hard shots throughout. Ospreay kept coming and went for the knock out blow time and again, but Gunther proved why he is one of the toughest wrestlers on the planet, and eventually, after many attempts to end him, land a Lariat that hit home hard enough to keep Ospreay down for the three.
* Bryan Danielson def. Ilja Dragunov with the Running Knee Strike. Both men left this match looking like their chests had been run through a meat grinder. Chops, kicks, dives, suplexes, cringey headbutts. Danielson got Ilja into the Cattle Mutilation at one point, but Ilja got a foot on the ropes somehow. Danielson actually transition that into a Regal Stretch, tying up the legs and applying a Chickenwing Facelock, but Ilja still showed his absolute grit and determination by pulling both of them to the ropes with his one free arm! Ilja would rally and deliver some big blows, including a Spinning Back Chop, a Powerbomb/H-Bomb, and the Constantine Special, but Danielson would not stay down! Dragunov went for the Torpedo Moscow, but Danielson delivered a well timed elbow strike to counter it! Danielson then hit his Running High Knee, wiping out Dragunov in climactic fashion to get the pinfall! Danielson and Dragunov shook hands after, with Ilja raising Bryan's hand in victory as the show came to an end.
